BioAmber SAS is a joint venture between ARD and its American partner DNP Green Technology. Resulting from an R&D partnership between its two shareholders, BioAmber is the first company in the world to have developed a proprietary technology for the production of bio-based succinic acid, to the commercial stage.  This technology, which is licensed with the American Department of Energy and based on a strain of E. Coli bacteria, makes it possible to substantially reduce production costs, and opens up new markets that are currently inaccessible to fossil-based succinic acid.

In the framework of the agreement with DNP, ARD industrialised its laboratory procedure and invested 21 million euros in an industrial demonstration facility with a capacity of 2000 tons per year.  BioDémo enjoyed financial support from from the General Council of the Marne Département (€1.25 million), the Champagne-Ardenne Region (€1.25 million) and the ERDF (€2.5 million). This unit will enable BioAmber to confirm the market, to approve its technology, and to finalise the process book, in order to prepare the sale of licenses expected in the 2010-2011 accounting year.
